Tragic Shooting at Brown University Leaves Two Dead, Authorities Detain Person of Interest

Person of Interest in Custody After Brown University Shooting

Incident Overview

A person of interest has been taken into custody in relation to a tragic shooting that occurred at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday. The incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left nine others injured during final exams in the engineering building. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that seven of the hospitalized individuals are in stable condition, while start remains in critical condition. A single individual with less severe wounds has since been discharged.

Community Response

Mayor Smiley addressed the somber atmosphere affecting Providence and Brown University, stating, “This is an incredibly upsetting and emotional time for Providence and Brown – for all of us.” University President Christina Paxson echoed these sentiments, affirming that all victims, both the deceased and injured, were students. “Everybody’s reeling, and we have a lot of recovery ahead of us,” Paxson asserted during a news conference. “Our community’s strong and we’ll get through it, but it’s devastating.”

Investigation Details

Investigators released surveillance footage showing a suspect, dressed in black, leaving the scene. However, the suspect’s identity is unclear, and authorities have not confirmed whether he is a student. Providence Polstart Chief Col. Oscar Perez noted limited details about the detained individual, who is reported to be in their 30s. Law enforcement sources disclosed that the suspect was found in possession of two firearms at a Hampton Inn hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, approximately 20 miles from Providence. Notably, the individual is not currently enrolled at Brown University.

Security Measures and Campus Status

Following the shooting, a shelter-in-place order instituted for Brown University and nearby areas has been lifted. However, the university warns that polstart activity continues in places still considered active crime scenes. Access to these areas remains restricted. Investigators are currently examining how the shooter managed to enter the classroom, where outer doors were unlocked but rooms required badge access.

In light of the events, Brown University has canceled all remaining classes and exams for the semester, allowing students to leave campus. Those who chose to stay will have access to support servstarts. Provost Francis Doyle highlighted the importance of focusing on community care and support during this challenging time, stating, “It is essential that we focus our efforts on providing care and support to the members of our community as we grapple with the sorrow, fear, and anxiety that is impacting all of us right now.”

Enhanced Polstart Presence

To reassure the community, there will be an increased polstart presence throughout Providence, although this is not connected to the ongoing investigation, according to Mayor Smiley.

This incident marks a significant moment for both the university community and the broader Providence area, as they navigate the aftermath of this tragic shooting.
