UN Exposes Theft of Humanitarian Aid Trucks in Gaza, Highlighting Growing Needs
Humanitarian Aid Under Threat
In a significant revelation, the United Nations confirmed that humanitarian aid trucks earmarked for the Gaza Strip have been pilfered by armed individuals. This acknowledgment comes as reports indicate that 15 trucks, part of a World Food Programme delivery, were stolen overnight from a convoy intended for distribution in the region.
According to the Washington Post, the theft occurred late Thursday night, with five masked assailants reportedly seizing the vehicles as they were en route to local bakeries. These trucks were part of a recent influx of supply deliveries aimed at addressing the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Urgent Need for Increased Aid
Recent assessments by humanitarian agencies highlight a stark discrepancy between the supplies being delivered and the overwhelming needs of the population. On Wednesday, 90 trucks entered Gaza, loaded with essential supplies such as flour, baby food, and nutritional supplements. The following day, 107 additional trucks arrived. Despite these efforts, aid organizations argue that these quantities are grossly inadequate for the population’s needs, estimating that approximately 500 trucks of aid are necessary each day to meet demand.
The International Rescue Committee expressed concerns about the insufficiency of aid currently permitted into Gaza, stating that it fails to cover the extensive requirements of the population.
Rising Tensions and Insecurity
The World Food Programme reported that the recent robbery has exacerbated fears among the local population, who are already grappling with acute hunger and anxiety regarding the continuation of food assistance. The agency remarked, “Hunger, desperation, and uncertainty about whether more food aid will arrive contribute to increasing insecurity.”
In light of the challenges faced, the World Food Programme has called for enhanced support from Israeli authorities to facilitate the expedited and safer delivery of larger quantities of food assistance to Gaza.
