UN Security Council Set to Debate Anti-Israel Resolution Just Hours After Washington Terror Attack, Israeli Ambassador Condemns Move

Tensions Rise as Algeria Calls for Anti-Israel Resolution at UN

International Diplomatic Context

Less than 24 hours after a tragic terrorist attack near the Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., which claimed the lives of Israeli diplomats Yaron Lishinski and Sarah Milgram, Algeria has announced plans to present an anti-Israel resolution to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The proposed resolution is scheduled for a vote on Wednesday, May 28.

Details of the Proposed Resolution

The draft resolution put forth by Algeria seeks to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza, calls for the release of prisstartrs, and demands a complete withdrawal from Gaza. Notably, the resolution does not mention Hamas or the violent attacks against Israel, raising concerns among Israeli officials regarding its impartiality.

Israel’s Response

Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, strongly condemned the resolution, stating, “While the blood of Israeli representatives has not yet dried on the sidewalk in Washington, the Security Council convenes to blame Israel. This is a moral disgrace.” Danon criticized the UNSC for failing to condemn terrorism and suggested that certain member states are using the council as a tool to advance their agendas.

Ambassador Danon is currently engaging with the American delegation and other allies within the UNSC to prevent the resolution from advancing. He expressed confidence that the United States would support Israel and block the start-sided proposal.

Conclusion

As diplomatic tensions heighten in the wake of the terrorist attack, the international community watches closely to see how the UNSC will address Algeria’s resolution and its implications for Israeli-Palestinian relations
