Urgent Call for Ethical Guidelines on AI in Healthcare Sparked by Concerns Over Patient Safety in Israel

Call for Regulatory Framework on AI in Healthcare Following Safety Concerns

The recent use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare settings has raised significant alarms among medical professionals and lawmakers. This concern follows a letter from Yossi Arbelich, the chairman and founder of “Lemaanchem,” who alerted Health Minister Uriel Busso about the risks posed by unchecked AI applications that potentially endanger patients.

Emerging AI Issues in Healthcare

In his letter, Arbelich emphasized the necessity for ethical guidelines and regulations governing the deployment of AI tools by medical personnel. He pointed out that some medical mishaps have been attributed to the improper usage of these technologies, urging immediate action to safeguard patient welfare.

Following this, Knesset Interior Committee Chairman MK Yaakov Asher and MK Matan Kahane from the “National Camp” reached out to Health Committee Chairman MK Yonatan Mishraki, requesting an urgent discussion regarding the ethical and professional standards surrounding AI in healthcare. In his correspondence, Asher noted, “Numerous reports indicate that the use of AI in the medical field underscores an urgent need for defined policies.”

Importance of Oversight

Asher outlined that while AI systems can greatly assist healthcare professionals, they are also pr- to errors. He stressed the critical nature of medical decisions, where reliance on AI could have dire consequences for patients. On the other hand, Kahane underscored the role of public representatives in ensuring that AI enhances the quality of care rather than undermining it, stating, “Clear regulations are necessary in a domain that is currently completely unregulated.”

Both Asher and Kahane are advocating for a swift assembly of the Health Committee to convene a discussion involving health leaders and technology experts. Their goal is to formulate a regulatory framework that guarantees AI use in healthcare not only protects patient rights but also maintains the high quality of medical treatment in Israel.

Preserving Human Capital

In addition, Asher has highlighted the need to ensure that any approved usage of AI systems preserves the skilled human resources of Israeli healthcare professionals. As the healthcare landscape increasingly integrates AI technologies, balancing innovation with patient safety and professional integrity remains paramount.

Bringing together policymakers, healthcare professionals, and technology experts, the proposed discussions aim to address these pressing issues and set the course for the ethical integration of AI in healthcare settings
