Volcanic Eruption in Guatemala Leads to Evacuations
Ongoing Eruption of Fuego Volcano
The Fuego Volcano in central Guatemala has erupted, prompting the evacuation of over 700 residents from nearby communities. This announcement was made today (Friday) by the country’s disaster agency, CONRED. Situated approximately 18 kilometers from the historic city of Antigua, the volcano has generated a significant plume of smoke and a lava flow that has accumulated around its crater, as reported by the Guatemalan Seismology Agency.
Monitoring the Situation
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as volcanic activity continues. The Fuego Volcano has been in a state of low-level activity since 2002. Earlier this year, in March, a notable eruption occurred, which sent ash clouds reaching up to 65 kilometers from the summit and necessitated the evacuation of around 30,000 people from the vicinity.
Recent Global Volcanic Activity
The Fuego Volcano’s eruption is not isolated; it follows a series of volcanic activities around the globe. Earlier this week, on Monday, Mount Etna in Italy erupted, causing panic in the surrounding area. Additionally, the Bulusan Volcano in the Philippines erupted in late April, alongside another eruption occurring in the months of April and May.
As the world experiences heightened volcanic activity, residents and travelers in affected regions are advised to stay informed and heed local authorities’ warnings.
For those planning to travel to these regions, securing accommodations and monitoring updates is advisable. You can
