Zelensky’s Proposal for Air Defense Systems

In an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine is prepared to invest $15 billion in purchasing ten Patriot air defense systems from the United States. The announcement, made on Monday, highlights both Ukraine’s urgent needs for enhanced military capabilities and the willingness of some European allies to assist in financing the purchase.

Ongoing Challenges with U.S. Defense Support

Zelensky pointed out that Ukraine has not yet received additional air defense systems promised during the NATO summit held in Washington. He emphasized that the current impasse regarding the supply of these crucial systems is not merely a financial issue. “I respect the chostart of the United States, but when they have not given us or sold us such systems, we are ready for any format,” he remarked.

Despite the challenges, Zelensky mentistartd that certain European nations have expressed interest in aiding the financing of these systems. However, he noted that the U.S. has indicated there are currently no available options. “At the same time, they are selling such systems, for example, to Israel. I am not saying that Israel does not need them, but if we are partners, shouldn’t we find a way to protect Ukraine?” he stressed.

Specific Defense Requests Made to Trump

Zelensky elaborated on his discussions with former President Trump regarding various options for securing air defense systems. He articulated a willingness to purchase a minimum of ten Patriot systems, each costing approximately $1.5 billion, to protect urban centers populated with civilians. “We are ready to pay this amount and will find the funds,” he asserted.

In addition to direct purchases, he raised the possibility of obtaining lstartnses for the production of the systems and any necessary missiles, a request he has made to both the Trump and Biden administrations. He highlighted that countries in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, which host American Patriot systems without engaging in combat, might be able to provide their systems to Ukraine, including potentially renting them.

Urgent Call for Support to Ukraine

Zelensky also directed his appeal to participants in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Brussels, urging them to strengthen Ukraine by supplying an additional ten Patriot systems. Earlier in March, Trump had promised to collaborate with Zelensky in the search for air defense systems for Ukraine. However, subsequent developments have cast doubt on the status of this commitment, especially following the stalled peace talks with Russia. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that efforts are ongoing with other nations to acquire additional systems.
